| About Laboratory of Information Technologies
| (till June, 2000: Laboratory of Computing Techniques and Automation)
At the resolution of 88th Session of the JINR Scientific
Council (june - 2000 ) - to reorganize the Laboratory of Computing Techniques and Automation
( LCTA ) into the Laboratory of Information Technologies ( LIT ) . The main LIT tasks will be
the maintenance of operation and the development of the computing and networking
In 2016 the JINR marked the 50-th anniversary of the foundation
of the Laboratory of Information Technologies (before 2000 - Laboratory of Computing Techniques and Automation).
The Joint Institute for
Nuclear Research Director academician N.N.Bogoliubov took the lead in the creation. The
new laboratory was to provide the JINR with the methods and tools of computing techniques,
mathematics and, later on, information and communication. The mathematical groups became the basis of the LCTA then. The leaders of these groups were:
- E. Zhidkov and N. Govorun
in the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics and the JINR Computing Centre;
- V.Karzhavin, G.I.Zabijakin,
V.I.Moroz in experimental laboratories
Experimenter physicist M. G. Mescheryakov became LCTA Director. M.
G. Mescheryakov realized a necessity of fundamental science based on powerful computing.
In 1946-1949 the first JINR accelerator-synchrocyclotron
was created in the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems under his leadership.
For almost 50 years the development of computing techniques and
forms of its application have passed many stages, which modified the work of both users
and the LIT (LCTA) itself. The work and skills of the LIT (LCTA) staff had several times to be matched
with up-to-date requirements upon modern techniques and services.
At present we can observe a radical change in the
application of computing techniques means towards the distributed computing and global
information society caused by the essential development of communication facilities and development of information technologies. These changes have led to a serious revision of the role of LIT (LCTA) and its purposes at JINR and as
a result to changes of the organization structure of the LIT (LCTA).
At present 322 employees work in the scientific
departments of LIT (2016). Among them are 7 professors, 25 doctors of science, 66 candidates of science.
