About Autumn School of Information Technologies 2023

              

Overview:

On 16-20 October, the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies (MLIT) hosted the Autumn School of Information Technologies of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR). The event represents the first stage in a series of JINR Schools of Information Technologies, the main goal of which is to involve young specialists in solving tasks that face JINR using state-of-the-art information technologies. Over 50 senior students from 11 Russian universities, including those ones where JINR Information Centres operate, participated in the event.

At the School, outstanding scientists delivered lectures on general topics to the students. JINR Vice-Director Vladimir D. Kekelidze (Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS)), Doctor of Physics and Mathematics) spoke about the history of JINR’s foundation, the Institute’s structure, its major achievements of recent years and directions of research. MLIT Scientific Leader Vladimir V. Korenkov (Doctor of Technical Sciences) presented to the audience a talk on the IT infrastructure of the Institute and the main projects implemented by MLIT. MLIT Director Sergei V. Shmatov (Doctor of Physics and Mathematics) discussed the most urgent problems in elementary particle physics, including data analysis. Director of the JINR Laboratory of Radiation Biology (LRB) Alexandr N. Bugay (Doctor of Physics and Mathematics) delivered a report in which he reflected the key role of information technologies in the development of life sciences, particularly in the tasks solved at LRB. MLIT Chief Researcher Gennady A. Ososkov (Doctor of Physics and Mathematics), a scientist who was at the forefront of the creation and use of machine learning algorithms at JINR, shared his experience in applying various methods to high-energy physics tasks. The listeners learned a multitude of useful information about opportunities for students from a lecture on the Institute’s educational programmes given by Deputy Director of the JINR University Centre Alexander Yu. Verkheev (Candidate of Physics and Mathematics).

The scientific programme was enriched by lectures of invited world-class experts. Alexander B. Degtyarev (Professor of the Department of Computer Modelling and Multiprocessor Systems of St. Petersburg State University, Doctor of Technical Sciences) spoke about the process of creating, developing and using a virtual laboratory to provide high-performance computing. Ruslan L. Smelyansky (Honored Professor of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Head of the Department of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics) delivered a lecture devoted to the network computing environment and algorithms for selecting the optimal transport channel. Arutyun I. Avetisyan (Director of the Institute of System Programming of the RAS, Academician and Professor of the RAS, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics) presented highly interesting materials about trusted artificial intelligence. A working visit to JINR was paid by Leonid B. Sokolinsky (Head of the Department of System Programming of South Ural State University, Professor, Doctor of Technical Sciences) who spoke about the application of artificial neural networks in linear programming. A lecture on the NIKS network for the development of the scientific and educational infrastructure of Russia was given by Andrey A. Gonchar (Deputy Director of the Interdepartmental Supercomputer Centre of the RAS). Alexander A. Moskovsky (General Director of RSC Group) enlarged upon the elaboration and implementation of advanced solutions in building Russian supercomputers.

The School’s programme was divided into several thematic areas. Within the scientific direction “Distributed and High-performance Computing for the Preparation, Implementation and Support of Experimental and Theoretical Research Carried out within JINR Large Research Infrastructure Projects”, the students listened to lectures by JINR scientists, representatives of collaborations of the experiments of the NICA complex, JINR’s flagship project: K.V. Gertsenberger (Candidate of Technical Sciences, VBLHEP), S. Hnatic (Candidate of Physics and Mathematics, MLIT), A.S. Zhemchugov (Candidate of Physics and Mathematics, DLNP), D.A. Oleynik (Candidate of Technical Sciences, MLIT), A.Sh. Petrosyan (Candidate of Technical Sciences, MLIT), F.V. Prokoshin (Candidate of Physics and Mathematics, DLNP), O.V. Rogachevsky (Candidate of Physics and Mathematics, VBLHEP), A.V. Taranenko (Candidate of Physics and Mathematics, NRNU MEPhI, VBLHEP JINR).

The scientific direction “Mathematical Modelling, Numerical Methods and Algorithms for Solving JINR Applied Tasks” was represented by lectures of Yu.L. Kalinovsky (Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, MLIT), E.G. Nikonov (Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, MLIT), A.A. Gusev (Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, MLIT), I.R. Rahmonov (Candidate of Physics and Mathematics, BLTP), H. Grigorian (Candidate of Physics and Mathematics, MLIT), A.S. Ayriyan (Candidate of Physics and Mathematics, MLIT). The HybriLIT Heterogeneous Computing Group headed by O.I. Streltsova (Candidate of Physics and Mathematics) conducted a tutorial within which the students learned to employ tools based on Python libraries and the Jupyter ecosystem in solving scientific and applied tasks.

The programme within the scientific direction “Modern Methods and Technologies of Information Processing and Analysis” embraced lectures and master classes from the team of the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI. A.A. Artamonov (Head of the Department of Competitive Systems Analysis of the NRNU MEPhI, Candidate of Technical Sciences) spoke about the practical application of Big Data analytics methods and algorithms, and department assistants E.V. Antonov, M.S. Ulizko and R.R. Tukumbetova demonstrated to the students algorithms for automated data acquisition, storage and visualization. A.V. Uzhinskiy delivered a lecture on machine learning in information processing and analysis tasks, specifically those solved at MLIT. A tutorial by A.V. Uzhinskiy on the application of the Google Earth Engine platform to geospatial data analysis on a planetary scale evoked a particular interest among the participants.

A separate session was devoted to the JINR Digital EcoSystem. MLIT specialists S.D. Belov, A.V. Prikhodko and K.V. Lukyanov told the audience about the development of a system that integrates various information and functional modules of the Institute’s scientific, organizational, administrative and service activities, as well as demonstrated the functional features of the system being developed and considered the tasks that need to be solved when creating and developing JINR websites and web services.

MLIT Deputy Scientific Leader T.A. Strizh (Candidate of Physics and Mathematics) gave a lecture about the support and development of the JINR Multifunctional Information and Computing Complex (MICC). MLIT Deputy Director D.V. Podgainy (Candidate of Physics and Mathematics) enlarged upon the “Govorun” supercomputer, which is part of the MICC, and D.V. Belyakov and M.I. Zuev discussed the tasks of elaborating and implementing new systems into the HybriLIT heterogeneous platform.

The Parallel Computing Hackathon, conducted by A.S. Ayriyan (Candidate of Physics and Mathematics, MLIT) and J. Busa (Candidate of Physics and Mathematics, MLIT), added the competitive spirit to the School’s programme. The students were asked to implement the fastest method for calculating the approximate value of π in terms of the volume of a three-dimensional sphere that was obtained as the sum of elementary volumes. The winners of the Hackathon (first place) were 3rd year students of Far Eastern Federal University (Danil Dereza, Gennady Karpov, Maxim Skazkin). The 2nd year student of St. Petersburg State University, Fedor Shuvalov, proposing an original, but slightly slower solution to the task, took the second place.

On the final day of the School there were held round tables within all scientific directions, where the scientists answered the students’ questions on materials from the lectures and classes. There emerged lively and fruitful discussions on possible topics of graduation theses within JINR research areas. Based on the results of the School, the students selected theses’ topics and JINR supervisors. During the second stage, namely, at the JINR Spring School of Information Technologies, which is planned for April 2024, the students will present the results of joint work with the Institute’s specialists.

One of the most memorable events of the School were excursions. The students visited the NICA accelerator complex, the “JINR Basic Facilities” exhibition and the JINR MICC at MLIT.

At the closing of the School, JINR Director Grigory V. Trubnikov, JINR Scientific Leader Victor A. Matveev, JINR Vice-Director Latchesar K. Kostov delivered speeches and congratulated the students wishing them success in their scientific work. University representatives A.B. Degtyarev (SPbSU), A.A. Artamonov (NRNU MEPhI), E.N. Cheremisina (Dubna University) and S.N. Chagovets (Tula State University) expressed gratitude to JINR, MLIT and the organizers for holding the School, which contributes to the strengthening of scientific ties and the involvement of young people in science.

JINR Autumn IT School 2023

Dear Colleagues!
From 16 to 20 October 2023, the JINR Autumn IT School will be held in the MLIT conference hall.

School program.
The School will be broadcast daily, the link is valid all week.

The Autumn IT School is the first stage in the series of Schools on Information Technologies at JINR. The JINR IT School is aimed at involving young specialists in solving problems in various fields of science using modern information technologies. At the School, students will get acquainted with the JINR program and, if interested, will have the opportunity to choose topics for their final qualifying papers.

All School participants must have laptops to participate in trainings.

Round table on education and student section at the GRID 2023 conference

Overview:

Within the international conference “Distributed Computing and Grid Technologies in Science and Education” (GRID 2023), which was held on 3-7 July at the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies (MLIT) of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), there were two events related to the educational activity on the training of specialists in computational physics and information technology

On 5 July, a round table on the interaction of scientific and educational organizations in the training of specialists for solving research tasks took place. The participants of the round table were representatives from Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), St. Petersburg University (SPbU), National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN), Khetagurov North Ossetian State University (NOSU), Tver State University (TvSU), Dubna State University, JINR’s University Centre and Laboratories. Such topics as the organization of network educational programmes in Russian universities with JINR’s partnership and the creation of network schools in the field of information technology, high-energy physics and megascience projects were mainly discussed at the meeting. SPbU Professors A.B. Degtyarev (Doctor of Technical Sciences) and A.V. Bogdanov (Doctor of Physics and Mathematics) presented the concept and principle of implementing the training of IT specialists in fundamental informatics and information technology. Professor V.A. Sukhomlin (Doctor of Technical Sciences) considered the concept and main characteristics of the master’s programme “Cybersecurity” of the MSU Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics, which had already been published in the International Journal of Open Information Technologies). Representatives of Dubna University spoke about the concept of teaching end-to-end digital technologies (E.N. Cheremisina, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Scientific Leader of the Institute of System Analysis and Management) and the challenges of digital transformation for IT education (M.A. Belov, Candidate of Technical Sciences), as well as proposed a solution to the problem of the formation of complex knowledge, skills and abilities using the Virtual Computer Lab of Dubna University. MLIT Deputy Director for the Development of International Cooperation S.G. Haroutyunyan (Doctor of Physics and Mathematics) shared information on the basic principles of teaching students at research universities. UC Director D.V. Kamanin (Candidate of Physics and Mathematics) enlarged upon JINR student programmes, and VBLHEP Lead Researcher A.V. Taranenko (Candidate of Physics and Mathematics) spoke about the NICA-University project. At the end of the round table, MLIT Researcher D.I. Priakhina delivered a report on the training of specialists in computational physics and information technology, as well as announced the Autumn IT School for students, which will be held in October 2023.

On 6 July, there was a student session, in which 16 students from different Russian universities (MSU, SPbU, RUDN University, NOSU, TvSU, Tula State University, Dubna University) participated. The students who took part in the Spring IT School, which was held on 18-19 April at MLIT JINR, presented the results of their work in JINR’s projects. Basically, the work was related to the development of systems for the SPD experiment of the NICA project, the mathematical modelling of physical processes, the use of machine learning methods for solving applied tasks, the administration of computing resources and the elaboration of plug-ins for websites..

The results of the events confirmed the necessity of performing such actions related to the educational activity on the training of specialists in computational physics and information technology.

IT School “Modern IT Technologies for Solving Scientific and Applied Problems”

Overview:

The V International Summer IT School for Young Scientists "Modern Information Technologies for Solving Scientific and Applied Problems" will be held from June 14 to 17 at the Khetagurov North Ossetian State University (NOSU), Vladikavkaz.

The main objectives of the IT-school are to familiarize participants with modern methods for solving applied problems on the latest computing architectures using parallel programming technologies, with modern methods and tools for data analysis, machine learning, in-depth training and gaining practical experience in solving applied problems in various aspects of megaprojects in high energy physics and data science tasks.

International Internship for young scientists from the CIS countries

Overview:

On June 13, 2023 Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technology hosted young scientists from the CIS countries within the 16th International Internship.

MLIT Scientific Secretary O.Yu. Derenovskaya welcomed the delegation and presented the major directions of the Laboratory's activities. M.I. Zuev (researcher) described in detail one of the components of the Multifunctional Information and Computing Complex (MICC), namely, the "Govorun" supercomputer, spoke about its architecture and tasks solved on it. After the lecture, young scientists visited the MLIT machine hall, where they learned the history of the development of JINR computer technologies and saw modern IT solutions of MICC, including a supercomputer. E .Mazhitova (junior researcher) enlarged upon JINR cloud technologies and demonstrated the possibilities of their usage.

The second half of the day was devoted to machine learning technologies. D.I. Priakhina (researcher) delivered a lecture on the application of machine and deep learning in applied tasks, in particular, those being solved at JINR, and then held a practical class, during which the young scientists mastered the basics of computer vision.

The students gained new knowledge that would become useful in future education and broadened their horizons.

Annotation:
The use of AI/ML techniques in networking has generated a lot of excitement and recent research. This panel will bring together researchers working at the AI/networking boundary to reflect on the problems and types of problems that can be successfully addressed by AI/ML techniques. The panelists will discuss areas where AI/ML may offer particularly fruitful opportunities, and the characteristics (timescales, available data, intra-versus-inter network, layers in the protocol stack, management?) of these areas, and what special networking support (if any) is needed for platforms supporting such uses of AI/ML in networking.

Spring Student School at MLIT

              

Overview:

The JINR Spring School of Information Technologies was held at the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies on April 18 - 19. The school was held in a mixed format and became the second stage in a series of IT-schools at JINR. Students from several universities presented reports on various topics. At the end of the School, they were admitted to speak at the GRID’2023 international conference.

The first stage of the School was held in November. There scientific groups were formed, including students, their supervisors from universities, and Institute staff members for joint work in JINR projects. 19 students from St. Petersburg University, the North Ossetian State University named after K. L. Khetagurov, the University “Dubna”, Tula State University, the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia took part in the School.

MLIT JINR Scientific Leader Vladimir Korenkov opened the School. “At the Autumn School, more than 20 students decided to write their Master’s and Bachelor’s theses about the research areas of our Institute. Today they are presenting the results of their six-month work,” he said. In total, School participants presented 18 reports on the following areas “Computing for SPD”, “Mathematical modeling, numerical methods, and algorithms for solving applied problems of JINR”, “Development of plug-ins for the JINR website”, “Machine learning in plant disease detection tasks”.

                 

At the closing of the School, the heads of the School’s research areas from JINR and universities appreciated the high level of students’ involvement in JINR projects, as well as the high level of preparation of their scientific papers. They recommended combining reports within one topic and making one general report from the scientific group at the youth section of the 10th International Conference “Distributed Computing and Grid Technologies in Science and Education” (GRID’2023). The Conference will be held in Dubna from 3 – 7 July 2023.

The JINR School of Information Technologies is aimed at involving young specialists in solving problems in various fields of science using modern information technologies, as well as the introduction to the JINR programme.
