18 March marks the 95th anniversary of the birth of the outstanding scientist Nikolai Nikolaevich Govorun (1930–1989). In commemoration of this memorable date, on 18 March, the international intergovernmental organization Joint Institute for Nuclear Research is holding a memorial seminar at the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies.

Within the ceremonial event, a presentation of an album book about Nikolai Govorun entitled “Nikolai Nikolaevich Govorun. Portrait in the background of an epoch” will take place. The book, published by the RMP publishing house, is based on the recollections of family members, friends, and colleagues of N.N. Govorun and is dedicated to the famous scientist’s life and stages of the path in science. The publication embraces a multitude of previously unpublished photographs and documents from the JINR and MLIT archives, as well as from personal archives. The project manager is Mikhail Lukichev.

Nikolai Nikolaevich Govorun is the Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, the initiator of the creation of the JINR local information and computing network, he stood at the origins of the application of computers in experimental data processing. His role in the automation of collecting and processing data from physical experiments, the creation of computing complexes, the development of various algorithms and software at JINR, as well as in the formation of the school of system programming in the USSR, is difficult to overestimate. Modern systems of parallel and distributed computing, grid technologies and cloud computing, distributed data storages and high-speed data transfer networks are inextricably linked with the name of N.N.
