Investigations by MLIT scientists in the latest issue of Natural Science Review

The second issue of the Natural Science Review international scientific journal has been published. The issue presents two large-scale reviews and two scientific articles covering computer science, biology, condensed matter physics, and mathematical physics. Among them there are works by staff members of the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies (MLIT).

A publication by MLIT Senior Researcher Alexander Uzhinskiy entitled “Efficient pipeline for plant disease classification” focuses on enhancing the efficiency of diagnostics and treatment of plant diseases using images. An extensive increase in the number of disease classes entails new experiments with architectures and training approaches. The published study proposes a solution based on the ConvNeXt architecture and the Large Margin Cosine Loss minimization function to detect 46 different plant diseases. The improved pipeline has already been implemented in the DoctorP platform, enhancing its ability to diagnose plant diseases with greater accuracy and reliability.

A group of JINR scientists, including MLIT Junior Researcher Dina Badreeva, as well as Sergei Kurakin, Olexander Ivankov, Tatiana Murugova, Norbert Kučerka, Alexander Kuklin, Ermuhammad Dushanov, Elena Ermakova, prepared a review entitled “Lipid membrane destabilization induced by amyloid-beta peptide in the systems mimicking preclinical Alzheimer’s disease”. The publication presents a discussion of works devoted to the study of lipid-peptide interactions under conditions simulating the preclinical stage of Alzheimer’s disease. The interactions observed are believed to be important in understanding the mechanisms of the beta-amyloid peptide destructive effect on lipid membranes and the corresponding onset of the disease. The authors emphasize that the methods of applied nuclear physics have proven to be remarkably relevant in such research, since they help to extract detailed information about the interactions and dynamics of biomembranes at the molecular level.
