MLIT Directorate participated in JINR delegation’s visit to NRNU MEPhI On 2 April 2026, Director of the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies Sergei Shmatov and MLIT Scientific Leader Vladimir Korenkov, as part of a JINR delegation headed by JINR Director, RAS Academician Grigory Trubnikov, visited the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (NRNU MEPhI). Prospects for enhancing cooperation with one of the leading technical universities in the Russian Federation were discussed in Moscow. One of the key events of the visit was a roundtable discussion, at which the parties talked over plans for scientific and educational collaboration, JINR’s personnel needs, proposals for opening new educational and scientific laboratories at MEPhI, and issues of updating the curricula of specialized educational programs. During the visit, the development of a MEPhI-based computer infrastructure to more actively involve university specialists in processing and analyzing data from JINR’s scientific experiments at NICA was discussed. “MEPhI is sufficiently prepared to connect its computing cluster to work with data from the NICA experiments, MPD, SPD, BM@N. At the same time, MEPhI specialists are performing design work and participating in the development of nodes for the SPD and MPD detectors, particularly in the online testing of TPC chambers for the multipurpose detector,” MLIT Scientific Leader Vladimir Korenkov said. Furthermore, the discussion focused on expanding the participation of JINR specialists in the educational process and increasing the number of students who undertake internships and prepare their final theses using JINR’s scientific infrastructure. Within the busy program of the visit, Grigory Trubnikov delivered a lecture on the JINR research program to MEPhI students and staff members. The JINR delegation visited MEPhI scientific departments, touring the laboratories and unique facilities, in particular the NEVOD (neutrino water detector) experimental complex and the ELF (experimental laser-physics facility) laser complex. The JINR representatives also took part in the opening of new educational and scientific laboratories of the Institute’s basic department at MEPhI, Department No. 11 entitled “Experimental Methods of Nuclear Physics”. In addition to Grigory Trubnikov, the Joint Institute’s delegation included JINR Scientific Leader, Academician Victor Matveev, the Institute’s Director’s Special Representative for Cooperation with International and Russian Scientific Organizations, Academician Boris Sharkov, heads of the Laboratories and the JINR University Center, as well as of the MPD, BM@N, SPD, and ARIADNA collaborations. Representatives of the management of Dubna State University also participated in the visit. NRNU MEPhI highly values its long-standing and strong scientific ties with JINR, where a large number of prominent scientists are its graduates. During the current visit, three of the five JINR Laboratories’ directors present, including MLIT Director Sergei Shmatov, are MEPhI graduates. As noted by official MEPhI sources, “such feedback from graduates, who understand the educational process at their home university and also have extensive experience in leading large research teams, is an invaluable opportunity to update the content of educational programs to reflect the current global scientific agenda”. Let us recall that in September 2025, a meeting with MEPhI Vice-Rector Natalia Barbashina, aimed at expanding educational cooperation with JINR, was held at MLIT JINR.
