Congratulations to Gheorghe Adam!

On 26 August 2023, Professor Gheorghe Adam, Chief Researcher of the Scientific Department of Computational Physics of the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, celebrates his 80th birthday.

Gheorghe Adam began his scientific activity after graduating from the Faculty of Physics of the University of Bucharest in 1967 with a degree in Theoretical Physics. Since 1969, he is an employee of Horia Hulubei National Institute for Research and Development in Physics and Nuclear Engineering, Bucharest, Romania. In 1980, he defended his doctoral thesis “Development of Computational Methods in Theoretical Physics”. Since 2000, he is Professor at the University of Bucharest.

The scientific biography of Gh. Adam is inextricably bound with JINR. He went from Researcher and Senior Researcher at the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics (1979–1983) to Deputy Director for Scientific Work at the Laboratory of Information Technologies (2003–2008, 2013–2018). Since 2009, Gh. Adam is Chief Researcher of the MLIT Scientific Department of Computational Physics (SDCP). Since 2005, he has been in charge of this department. He made an invaluable contribution to the organization of MLIT’s scientific life. Under his leadership, the SDCP has been successfully handling the tasks set. In 2005–2013, he was the co-leader of theme 05-6-1060-2005/2013 “Mathematical Support of Experimental and Theoretical Studies Conducted by JINR”. Since 2014, he has been the leader of theme 05-6-1119-2014/2023 “Methods, Algorithms and Software for Modeling Physical Systems, Mathematical Processing and Analysis of Experimental Data”. Since 2006, Gh. Adam has been the co-chairman of the organizing committee and a member of the program committee of 7 international conferences MMCP (“Mathematical Modeling and Computational Physics”) organized by MLIT JINR and other institutions in Slovakia and Dubna. He played an indispensable role in editing and publishing the Proceedings of MMCP conferences in 2011, 2015, 2017 and 2019, published in Lecture Notes in Computer Science and EPJ – Web of Conferences.

Gheorghe Adam is a well-known scientist in computational physics and mathematics. He has priority in the development of numerical perturbation methods for solving ordinary differential equations, methods for the numerical integration of products of functions, methods of Bayesian quadrature, the detection of the Fermi surface in positron spectroscopy. Gh. Adam did a lot for the development and application of computational physics methods to investigate the properties of transition metals, the crystal field, high-temperature superconductivity. He is the author of new methods of computational mathematics and computational physics.

Gheorghe Adam is the author of more than 230 scientific papers, laureate of the Romanian Academy of Sciences. Since 1996, he is a professional member of the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM); since 1993, he is a member of the American Mathematical Society (AMS); since 2009, he is an expert of the National Committee for Scientific Research of Canada. He is a reviewer in the Mathematical Reviews journal, he published more than 170 reviews on scientific papers/monographs in various branches of applied mathematics (numerical analysis, quantum mechanics, statistical physics, symmetry groups). He is also a reviewer in Computer Physics Communications, the Journal of Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical.

Gheorghe Adam takes an active part in the development of cooperation with Romania, for many years he headed the national group of Romania at JINR. He was awarded the Certificate of Honor from the Government of the Moscow Region, Letter of Appreciation from the Governor of the Moscow Region, Letter of Acknowledgment from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, and has the title of “Honorary Fellow of JINR”.

Gheorghe and his wife Sanda set an example of long-term friendship and love, mutual support and respect. Communication with their son, granddaughter and grandson who live overseas plays a major role in their lives.

Dear Gheorghe! We heartily congratulate you on your anniversary and wish you good health, energy and success in your work, well-being, mutual understanding and happiness in family life. All the very best to you!
