Seminar of Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics

Leader – Lychagin E.V.

December 11, 2024
FLNP Conference Hall
Dubna, Russia
Overview:

Wednesday, 11 December 2024, at 3:00 PM in the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics (FLNP) Conference Hall the Joint Laboratory Seminar will be held.

Seminar topic: “Orbital degrees of freedom in condensed matter physics

Speaker: S.V. Streltsov
Corresponding Member of RAS, Professor of RAS, Dr. Sci. in Physics and Mathematics M.N.Mikheev Institute of Metal Physics, Ural Branch RAS, Yekaterinburg, Russia

Abstract:

The properties of transition metal compounds are largely determined by the nontrivial interplay of different degrees of freedom: charge, spin, lattice, and also orbital ones. Especially rich and interesting effects occur in systems with orbital degeneracy. They result in the famous Jahn-Teller effect, leading to a plethora of consequences, in static and in dynamic properties, including nontrivial quantum effects. In the present talk, we will discuss the main phenomena in the physics of such systems, with particular attention to their novel manifestations. We will first briefly discuss the basic phenomena and their description, and then focus on several specific directions in this field. One of them is the reduction of effective dimensionality in many systems with orbital degrees of freedom due to the directional character of orbitals, with concomitant occurrence of some instabilities, leading, in particular, to the formation of dimers, trimers and similar clusters in the material. The properties of such cluster systems, largely determined by their orbital structure, are discussed in detail, and many specific examples of those in different materials are presented. Another large area that has gained particular importance relatively recently is the role of relativistic spin-orbit interaction. The mutual influence of this interaction and the more traditional Jahn-Teller physics are considered in detail in the second part of the review. In discussing all these issues, special attention is paid to the new quantum effects in them.

The research was supported by the Russian Science Foundation (project № 23-12-00159).

As Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology approaches maturity, the scientific community is now turning its attention to more advanced applications of quantum networks at metropolitan and international scales, such as distributed/delegated quantum computing and quantum sensor networks, requiring end-to-end entanglement of qubits, quantum memories, and varying degrees of fault tolerance. To make a leapfrogging advance, the co-existence of upcoming quantum networks with classical networks is also becoming more focal, with a significant impact at the physical level (i.e., the sharing of a telco fiber or rack space in an exchange point) and from a logical perspective (i.e., the integration with control/management planes of an Internet Service Provider or the interplay with classical jobs to be executed in a High-Performance Computing infrastructure). In this panel, we will discuss the research and development trends currently occupying the top positions of the priority list to make the Quantum Internet a real thing, with a tangible impact on industry, science, and society.

Sculptor Alexander Mironov managed to masterfully convey not only the image of Boris Onykiy, but also symbolically capture the key milestones in Boris Nikolayevich’s life path - the Riga Nakhimov Naval School, MEPhI, the Central Institute for Advanced Studies of the Ministry of Medium Machine Building, the Academy of Cryptography of the Russian Federation and many others.

The opening ceremony of the memorial plaque was attended by relatives, friends and associates of Boris Nikolaevich, each of whom had warm words of gratitude and appreciation for him.

Oleg Nagornov, First Vice-rector of MEPhI, noted that "Boris Nikolaevich made an invaluable contribution not only to the development, but also to the existence of MEPhI. He had a difficult time in the history of MEPhI. He was able to hold this ship, for which we express our great gratitude to him."

Vladimir Korenkov, Scientific Leader of the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technology of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, noted that Boris Onykiy was able to contribute to many different scientific fields: "He was a symbol of cooperation between the JINR Laboratory of Information Technology, MEPhI and CERN ", co-founder of the Dubna School, many of whose students have already become prominent scientists themselves, who they preserve and multiply the knowledge and principles laid down by Boris Nikolaevich. More recently, I became aware that the JINR University Centre was established in 1993 on the initiative of Boris Nikolaevich. I would like to thank everyone present and wish his followers, students, and students great success, but first of all all the best to his wonderful family."

A warm, family atmosphere prevailed at the event, which continued in the evening with memories of Boris Nikolaevich's role and contribution to the life of each of his friends, associates, followers and students.

On February 13, 2024, CNews is holding a conference "Artificial Intelligence Technologies 2024 ".

The Russian market for AI solutions is growing rapidly, significantly outpacing the global market in terms of growth rates. In most segments, domestic products are not inferior to foreign competitors. Therefore, the artificial intelligence technology segment suffered little from the sanctions. Most companies did not need import substitution - they initially purchased domestic solutions. The cost of AI solutions has begun to decline, technologies are becoming available to medium and small businesses. And government support will allow us to refine the functionality and create platform solutions that customers currently lack.

NetworkingChannel
Overview:
Dear Colleagues,
On Wednesday, January 17 at 19:00 MSK within the consortium "Network and Cloud Technologies" online-seminar from https://networkingchannel.eu will take place.

Topic: "Cloudflare in the Context of CDN Services: Architecture, operations, and their impact on research"
  • Marwan Fayed – Technical lead and Manager – Cloudflare Research – Visiting Professor – University of St Andrews – UK
Organizers: Annotation:
A large portion of content on the Internet today is delivered to clients from hosting services and distribution networks. In sharing the ‘CDN’ label, it is natural to regard the underlying systems and operations as equivalent, and yet they are vastly different. An understanding of their similarities, their differences, and their motivations, can help not only to explain observations, but also inform opportunities. Cloudflare, for example, serves content on behalf of millions, and yet hosts virtually none of it. The Cloudflare network is among the most, if not the most, connected on the Internet, and uses anycast at scales that can defy understanding. In this talk I will cover some of the aspects of Cloudflare and its architecture that shape operations, some that are unique among content services. We’ll get hints of the interactions between business decisions and technological innovation in ways that, just maybe, help open avenues of investigation in the research community.
