Online-seminar "Crafting Principled Machine Learning Architectures for Networked Systems"
Modern networking environments’ dynamic and unpredictable nature poses significant challenges for traditional design approaches and off-the-shelf machine learning methods. As networked systems adapt to changing conditions, such as topology shifts, complex constraints, and unforeseen scenarios, they often outpace the capabilities of conventional solutions. In this panel, we will advocate for a cross-disciplinary approach that integrates insights and techniques from both networking and machine learning and will showcase two recent approaches that exemplify this ethos.

Online seminar at the CMC MSU faculty

Analyzing robustness-computational cost trade-off in generative AI models for AGI roadmap.
Speaker: Espinola Rivera Holger Elias, in short - Holger - Postgraduate student of the Institute of Computer Science and Cybersecurity of SPbPU. Report in English, approximately 40 minutes, including questions..
Abstract:
One of the central challenges in artificial intelligence, particularly with large language models (LLMs), is trade-off between developing robust reasoning models with explainable capabilities and the limitation of availability of data and computer power resources. Traditional LLMs excel at pattern recognition, language generation, and tasks relying on memorized data having as core solution the transformer architecture and prompt engineering techniques to overcome some scenarios where LLM are prone to hallucinate. However, LLM under pre-trained recipe struggle with complex problem-solving that requires step-by-step logical reasoning, such as mathematical computations, coding, or scientific analysis, and with this complexity, the computational power and the need for more data, grows. The LLM are just sophisticated pattern matchers, or they truly reason? In the next report, we will explore the mathematical and computer science foundations which support the recent developments, analyzing the advantages and the limitations of the best performing solutions like the reasoning-oriented Reinforcement Learning process and Chain-of-Thoughts, going further exploring in mathematics and neuroscience, some ideas in order to overcome the robustness-cost tradeoff for generative models.

Modern Telecommunications and Mathematical Theory of Teletraffic
the 91th session of the scientific inter-university seminar "Modern Telecommunications and Mathematical Theory of Teletraffic" will be held on February 28, 2025, 16:00
Seminar Topic: Discrete optimization in queueing systems by reinforcement learning vs random search method.
Speaker: Dmitry Efrosinin, Doctor of Sci. Math., Professor, Acting Head of the Institute for Stochastics of the Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria.
The topic of the paper is to discuss the application of reinforcement learning algorithms to discrete optimization problems in queueing theory. As a concrete example, we consider the problem of optimal allocation of customers between servers in a multichannel queueing system with a finite population, a common queue, and heterogeneous servers with the aim of minimizing the average cost per unit of time. To verify the experimental results of optimal control obtained, a dynamic programming algorithm is used. Moreover, we have additionally applied an alternative numerical random search method based on the simulated annealing algorithm. A discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the methods used as well as the peculiarities of their use for controlled queueing systems is carried out.
Moreover, the following problems are discussed in brief:
1. Formulation of the optimization problem as a Markov or semi-Markovian controlled process 2. Reinforcement learning algorithms based on state action value function Q 3. Reinforcement learning algorithms based on the policy gradient. 4. Principles of the simulated annealing.

Report on the Dagsthul Seminar “Research Infrastructures and Tools for Collaborative Networked Systems Research"
Dear Colleagues,
Experimental research on networked and distributed systems requires a suitable research infrastructure to perform experiments. Despite past numerous efforts and initiatives, the community recognizes the obvious shortcomings of the approach and solutions that have been used until recently. A Dagstuhl Seminar was held on November 2024, discussing how to find ways to increase the value and suitability of these research infrastructures. The seminar aimed to support the research community in increasing quality, reproducibility and reuse of research results, and to allow for a more efficient use of research infrastructure resources. Moreover, research infrastructures should evolve towards advanced scientific instruments that offer a vital insight to the underlying information in improvising the understanding of science methodologies and practices as they reliably and precisely help the scientist to measure the subject of their investigations.
We are thrilled to welcome Paul Mockapetris, the visionary inventor of the Domain Name System (DNS).
