Numerical investigation of influence of finite sample thickness on laser ablation of materials

We offer to your attention a preprint “Numerical Solution of the Cauchy Problem Based on the Basic Element Method” (P11-2022-32) published by the JINR Publishing Department. The authors: I. V. Amirkhanov, I. Sarkhadov, Z. K. Tukhliev, H. Gafurov.

In previous works, numerical simulations of laser ablation of materials that occurs under the action of ultrashort laser pulses in semi-constrained samples were carried out. In the present work, a similar numerical study was carried out in samples of a finite size. The action of the laser is taken into account through the source functions in the heat conduction equation, setting the coordinate and time dependences of the laser source. During laser ablation of the material, the thickness of the sample changes. By passing to the moving coordinate system, the problem with moving boundaries is transferred to the problem with fixed boundaries. In this case, in the heat conduction equation, along with the diffusion term, a convective heat transfer term arises. In our new formulation of the problem, the variable thickness of the sample affects not only the... read more...

Digital JINR Ecosystem presented at CP JINR

Director of the Laboratory of Information Technologies Vladimir Korenkov made a presentation of the Digital JINR Ecosystem on 23 November at the CP session in Egypt.

Digital JINR is a platform that provides access to an extensive network of a wide variety of JINR information services. This includes both scientific and administrative services: from resources for users of basic facilities to registration of business trips or tickets, ordering certificates and statements online.

“Some of the services are already available, but, of course, there is still a lot to integrate into Digital JINR or create from scratch. The system will steadily acquire new capabilities. But now Digital JINR allows monitoring the Institute’s network and engineering systems. This will allow developing JINR in a balanced way in this direction,” Vladimir Korenkov said at the presentation.

Digital JINR is, in fact, a single window service in the JINR’s digital environment. The system has a user-friendly interface since everyone can customise its homepage according to their needs: display... read more...

Performance and memory capacity of «Govorun» supercomputer increased

On Monday, 14 November, the opening of the modernised «Govorun» supercomputer was held at the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies in the framework of the JINR Autumn School of Information Technologies. The performance of the supercomputer enhanced by 23,5% and reached 1,1 petaflops level, memory capacity increased.
The computing power of the JINR supercomputer enhanced after adding of 32 ultra-modern modules each of which had a huge amount of nuclei with big ultra-fast random access memory. The second thing that was done was purchase and installation of 8 flash arrays to deal with big data. One such compact unit keeps 1 petabyte of memory. Just few years ago, it would be a closet completely filled with disk servers. This became the third stage of modernisation of the supercomputer.

AYSS Seminar "The role of computing in scientific research" - 22.09.2022

Dear colleagues,
Association of Young Scientists and Specialists (AYSS) of JINR informs: on Thursday, September 22, at 4:00 PM, in the hall of the JINR Scientists’ Club (6, Joliot-Curie street, left side) a seminar by MLIT researcher Igor Pelevanyuk "The role of computing in scientific research " will be held.
“Science has been existing for a very long time, but computers – the way we know them now – emerged only 80 years ago. At that time, machines able to conduct operations with 0 and 1 became the result of achievements in science. Now they themselves are a condition for unique and complicated scientific research,” the speaker comments on the seminar topic.
Audience will learn:
  • Why is it so?
  • How are computers developing?
  • How should we use them?
  • How can we obtain results “even quicker”

From 4:00 PM there will be a small coffee break which precedes the seminar. The report will start at 4:15 PM.

Monograph by O. Chuluunbaatar and T. Zhanlav

The “Kurs” publishing house published a monograph by O. Chuluunbaatar (MLIT Deputy Director, Academician of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences) and T. Zhanlav (JINR Honorary Doctor 2012, Academician of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences), which is devoted to “New Developments of Newton-Type Iterations for Solving Nonlinear Problems”.
In Newton-type methods, iteration parameters play a key role. Suitable choices of these parameters not only speed up convergence, but also extend the convergence domain. Over the last two decades, many papers on this topic have been published. The monograph systemizes the results obtained in this area, including the results of the authors’ joint studies obtained in collaboration with co-authors. The present book will be useful to readers, graduate students and researchers interested in the field of applied mathematics, numerical analysis and applied sciences.

MLIT – an information partner of "Digital Breakthrough 2022. Season: Artificial Intelligence"

The Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies (MLIT) became an information partner of the competition "Digital Breakthrough 2022. Season: Artificial Intelligence". The Laboratory’s specialists in artificial intelligence and machine learning formulated the task on plant disease detection using neural networks with a small training dataset.
Alexander Vladimirovich Uzhinskiy, MLIT leading programmer: “A multitude of tasks in the field of data analysis are solved at the Laboratory; however, most of them require certain competencies. For example, people from the outside may experience problems when solving the task of reconstructing the trajectory of a particle passing through a detector. Therefore, we tried to select a task, the solution of which requires only knowledge in the field of image classification using neural networks. The task on plant disease detection by photos is of great practical importance since crop losses because of diseases and pests may reach up to 30%”.
We hope that the competition’s participants will provide new original solutions, the implementation of which will help to increase yields and minimize losses in both agricultural holdings and farms.

Numerical Solution of the Cauchy Problem Based on the Basic Element Method

We offer to your attention a preprint “Numerical Solution of the Cauchy Problem Based on the Basic Element Method” (P5-2021-50) published by the JINR Publishing Department. The author is N. D. Dikusar.

Within the framework of the basic element method (BEM), a fundamentally new approach to the numerical solution of the Cauchy problem for ODE (BEM–PC method) is proposed. In BEM–PC, an explicit scheme of the “predictor–corrector” type is used, conventionally called the “target detection scheme”. Calculation of the prediction for the next step is carried out using two BEM-polynomials of the fifth degree, connected by additional conditions. The first polynomial calculates the “aiming point”, and the second determines the “target coordinate”, i.e. a point close to the exact solution. Such a scheme is stable in calculations with an extremely small step (h = 10−17, 10−15). The method has been verified by a stiff Cauchy problem test and comparisons with errors of popular classical methods. With the help of examples it is shown that the accuracy of the BЕМ–PC method is not worse than the... read more...

Also, intense cyberattacks in all directions have been observed, further complicating access to external networks.
Attacks and hacks with the possible placement of various information on websites have intensified. We kindly ask you to regularly (once every 2-3 hours) monitor the websites for which you are responsible. We ask you to be careful and do not leave sites unattended.
